We finally used our season passes to the Oakland Zoo this week. It took me a minute or two, okay maybe more like 15 minutes, to find the tickets but I did and we were off to the zoo. We went with our best buds Sadie and Boone and made it a fun day together. It was the perfect day to go. The weather was not hot but not too cold which meant the animals were out and ready to be stared at.
Our first stop was at the flamingos. They loved them but they were eager to move on and see more animals.
Next stop were the chimpanzees. And this little guy found a nice perch and stared at everyone walking by. The kids stared right back. On the topic of staring, I get lots when they wear the cute little back packs. But maybe it’s because my kids are so darn cute. That’s what I like to think.
We met these two friendly guys who were kind enough to let Holly and JD on their back for a photo. They loved the reptile center. When JD saw the real frogs he yelled, “Wow, cool Mom.” I love that he every once and a while he calls me Mom. It makes him sound so grown up. The kiddos were so well behaved and loved seeing every animal.

We love the petting zoo portion of the zoo and especially these fun goats that roam their yard while young children chase and try to comb them. Very patient creatures. JD tried climbing on top of the rocks to get to them. Not a good idea boy. Holly had enough of these guys and found the exit quickly. Our last stop were some of favorites; giraffes, elephants and Holly’s personal favorite the ‘bezras’.
The little amusement park is conveniently located on our way out of the zoo and since we had free passes we decided to ride the train. Oh but wait, there are some fun cars that JD is dying to ride. Now by this time it is well passed their nap time, just a warning. In order to ride the car merry-go-round by themselves, parents aren’t allowed to ride, children have to be at least 36″ tall. I measured them and they were just there. JD a little taller than Holly. The grown dude running the joint insisted on measuring them and determined, after matting JD’s curls down that he was tall enough. While JD is shoving his ticket into the guys face, he tells Holly to trust him and let him measure her. After pushing Holly’s feet back to the board and matting her hair down he determines that she is not tall enough and therefore because she is 1/4″ too short she is not deemed safe to sit in the car and go in a circle. Ugh. Does not make for happy children, who are way passed their nap time, and makes for a very upset mother. We decided to stand in line and wait for the train. Mommy’s fuming and JD and Holly are crying to ride the car and the train.
Thankfully the train arrived and after our calming train ride I see there is a new dude running the cars and we wander over, tell him my children are tall enough to ride and hand him my tickets. Holly and JD were on cloud nine. They loved every minute of it. They didn’t want to get off and that was another battle but it was worth it. Until our next trip to the zoo.
