Operation Get Some Sleep, For Serious!

As if I was joking before! I hate that I get so frustrated with my sweet babies when they don’t sleep. I don’t like that I turn into a mean wife and mother. I’m quick to be offended and get easily annoyed. And that is not who I am, at least I hope not! After we tried to get the babies to fall asleep on their own a little while ago Holly started crawling and cutting more teeth and then they both got sick causing them to wake up in the middle of the night. I know they are supposed to go through the night without eating but it was just so much easier, or so it seemed. After a rough night, well one of many, Jim and I decided we needed to let them cry it out, for reals. It took them 30 min to get to sleep and then like clock work they were both awake at 1:15am. We let them cry and every once and a while I’d go and check on them to find JD standing, cuz he can do that now, and Holly sitting. They cried for an hour before JD finally gave in. Holly continued to cry for another hour and I went and brought her into bed with me. By now it’s 3am and I decided to feed her. She fell asleep, I laid her in bed and she woke up so back into bed with me she came. I heard JD crying at 6:30 and by the time I got myself out of bed and into their room he was asleep. So I went back to sleep. He woke up for good at 7:15. Now I know I can let them cry it out but man it’s hard! I know it’s best for them. Especially when this morning, though with puffy eyes, they were happy and still loved me!

It is true they will always love you. One thing we did, and you may have heard this before and are doing this is give them a dose of tylenol before they go to sleep. It can help. I know teething can affect the ears and laying flat tends to put pressure on them as well. If I think of any other tricks that could possible work I will let you know. Keep it up, I know it is hard to see your babies cry but you all will get through it and I am sure you will have some tears of your own. Hang in there.

If you need some reinforcement, read “Healthy Sleep, Happy Child”. Very practical reading with stories to illustrate the points the author makes. (Be careful about bringing them into bed with you when you are “crying it out” because they will learn to cry for a hour or two and then you will come get them.) My doctor said since babies at that age are older and stronger, they can cry for 3 hours or more. Plug in some earplugs and know they will be OK. Good Luck Liz. You are a great mom!

Liz,
I feel your pain! Though you have it harder with twins, Jackson was a TERRIBLE sleeper. He was a colicky infant and didn’t sleep through the night until 10 months. I thought I was going insane. Sleep deprivation is awful isn’t it?
I’m glad the babies are getting the hang of it, and maybe you can meet your real self again sometime soon, ha ha!
Good luck!
